1993 Red Burgundy Tasting
with Allen Meadows of Burghound

"The excellent 1993 need 8-20 more years of aging." - Allen Meadows

Wines listed in order tasted.

1993 Nuits St. Georges Aux Boudots Meo Camuzet
Directly on the Beaune border. Darker color. Very cloudy. Slightly medicinal nose but definitely fruity nose, too. Tart Cherries and Ripe red plums, red berries. Very balanced. Loooong finish. Great acids. More concentrated style. On the tarter side. Jack: Long finish. Good acids. Needs a little more time yet. Has a maturity to it, too. Makes me hungry. A serious wine.

1993 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St. Jacques A. Rousseau
Clos St. Jacques is very consistent – very close to Grand Cru on map. I liked this wine. Bright Moroccan spices – coriander on the nose with undertones of cherry. Really really bright cherry acids with slightly curry exotic finish. Really, really long finish. Jack: Silky. Good acids. A little more sweetness than the Meo Cazumet and Chevillon.  Very appealing to drink now, though not at its prime.  3

1993 Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses J.F. Mugnier
Nose of green fruit (pear/apple) and pine needles!. High acids. Bright center notes. Clean. Pine and green fruit and citrus and cherry. Nose could almost be mistaken for white wine? Interesting wine! Jack: Most astringent so far. Good acids. Appealing. In need of food. Allen called him “…a winemaker’s winemaker.”

1993 Chambertin J. Drouhin
I liked this wine. Fresh mesquite on the nose. Great spices. Good acids. Clean. Hint of cinnamon and cloves. Almost a slight bit of pepper on finish. Salty finish. Try with Duck. Allen said ages unbelievably well. Jack: Big! Powerhouse. Dry. Nice complexity. Strong acids. Not exciting me.

1993 Charmes Chambertin Dujac
Wow. Nose is essence of Pinot Noir! A quintessential Burgundy. A tiny bit of medicine on finish. Very different from the first five. Really, really long finish. Jack: Amazing. Interesting nose. Super delicious finish. So smooth. Party in your mouth. Easily one of the 3 or 4 best burgundies I’ve ever tasted – maybe the best? “Requires aging.”  12-24

1993 Corton-Rognet B. Ambroise
Deep ruby/garnet color. Tastes like Roasted Duck. You can drown in this wine. Concentrated extracted style. Looong finish. Jack: This is really great. Fifth(?) best burgundy I’ve had. Delicious. The oak is not subtle, though.  3-6

1993 Griottes Chambertin Chezeaux
This is the smallest Grand Cru. Stinky cheese nose plus berries. Green herbs – lighter style wine. Not quite as long a finish as first 4. Re-tasted at end – this wine stands out. Jack: Palette cleansing. I like this, too! Lots going on. Just very enjoyable. Liking it less the more I have it.   4?

1993 Clos de la Roche H. Lignier
Slight V/A on nose. Slightly stinky. Slightly bitter. Not an over the top wine. Just solid and balanced and elegant. Very good wine. Jack: Great nose. Elegant. Retaste: Great nose! Yum.   6+

1993 Vosne Romanee Les Beaux Monts Leroy
This wine was corked but poured for those who wanted to taste it. Good acids. Great elegant wine with a long finish. Jack: Very corked – but you can see excellence here. Buy one sometime.

1993 Romanee St. Vivant R. Arnoux
This was Joanne’s favorite. Allen Meadows said to drink it now. Seductive, passionate nose. Slightly brown on edges. I can drink this all night right now. Spices, Depth. Long finish. Luscious fruit. Good acids. Jack: Very appealing. What’s not to like?    8+

1993 Richebourg J. Grivot
Fresh Cream on nose. Bright bright. Tea and cherry. Very high acids. Jack: Chemical nose – yuck! Hate the nose. Wine is good – just not my style.

1993 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Comte de Vogue
Allen thinks this will age 50 years. I like this wine. Coffee on nose. Coffee! With clean acids and chocolate. Jack: Good! Allen says, “Long, long ager – 2050 it’ll be the best.”

1993 Bousselots Nuits St George Robert Chevillon
Allen Meadows said “No surer bet for $50 in Burgundy… Chevillon rarely misses…” Fruit forward. Ripe red cherry nose. Not so long a finish as #1. Softer edges like cherry soda. Just not as well made or fruit not as good. Jack: Very appealing nose. I really like. Medium-long finish. Dry plums/dark cherries. Bright fruit.
