Tasting Notes - October 1, 2007 - Joanne and Jack

Bonhams & Butterfields
Pre-Auction Wine Tasting - September 2007

September 27, 2007
at Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco
Jack's comments: Another excellent tasting... Standouts this evening were the 2001 Dujac Bonnes Mares, the 1997 Voerzio Barolo La Serra and the 1998 Chapoutier Ermitage Les Meal. The 1975 Stag’s Leap SLV Lot 3 was in top form but the 1999 Darnat Meursault Clos Richemont was clearly prematurely oxidized. But the Darnat was still much more enjoyable than the 1996 Silver Oak and the abominable 2003 & 2004 Blankiets - imagine dried cherry syrup with wine-like characteristics.

Bright acidic and spicy but with a tight center and a light finish. Drink now.
2003 Blankiet Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills
Dried cherry on nose. Very extracted cherry and tight cherry finish.
2004 Blankiet Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills
Lots of fruit on the nose. Harder, leaner fruit on center, with a tight, dry finish. Some wood showing. More drinkable than the 2003.
1990 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio all’Oro Riserva
Black currant on nose. Tight black fruit. Good fruit on finish with integrated acids.
2002 Castello Banfi Chianti Classico Riserva
Lemony nose (a hint of TCA?). Slight TCA and lots of fruit in center with a dry finish.
1998 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Meal
Stinky, bloody, iron-y nose with fruit underlying. Seems really young. Tight acidic finish. Good balance of fruit to acids.
1994 Chateau Haut Brion
Herbs and dark cherries on nose. Hard dark cherry center with concentration. Slightly tannic finish.
1952 Chateau Lafite Rothschild
Nose of warm browned herbs. Brown sherried mushrooms with cooked cherries. Holding together but weak acids on finish. (Jack liked the elegance of the wine and would be happy to pay $75 for a bottle but $275.)
1983 Chateau Lafite Rothschild
Spicy nose. Acidic, thin, cooked cherries with bright cherry on finish. Showing it’s age.
1983 Chateau Latour
Closed nose of medium cherry. Hard cherry medicinal center with a tight finish which shortened after some opening time when we re-tasted it.
1994 Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Spicy herbal nose. Tight center with a slightly tannic finish. Later, good fruit with a vanilla element, but weak fruit on finish and finish slightly watery.
1996 Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Fruity, expressive nose. Spicy, fruity center with darker fruit. Slightly tannic tight finish.
1993 Chateau Musar
Cold cream/body lotion perfumey nose. Creamy very perfumey/powdery hard center with a slightly medicinal finish. Some loved this wine.
1999 Chateau Raymond Lafon Sauternes
Lemon and flowers on nose. Light sweet center, with herbs and flowers. Pretty clean.
1997 A. Conterno Barolo Vigna Cicala
Jack thought this was clearly an off-bottle.
1999 Darnat Meursault Clos Richemont
Prematurely oxidized. Nose of brown sugar and lemon. Rounder center of vanilla custard with a lemony custardy finish. Long, long finish. The custardy element was attractive. The nose was a turn-off and got worse with opening time.
2001 Dujac Bonnes Mares
Coriander and cherries on nose – a perfumey nose. Pink peppercorn on center with a long, long finish. Later a nice floral nose with brighter blueberry on center and a weaker finish.
2001 E. Guigal Chateauneuf du Pape
Perfumey, slightly powdery nose. Lovely cardamom center with light spicy fruit and a long finish.
1996 Heitz Cabernet Sauvignon Bella Oaks
Stinky animal and herbs on nose. Very stemmy center with green pepper and herbs.
2000 Kistler Chardonnay Kistler Vyd
Custardy nose. Pear and ginger with lemon on the finish. Good balance – not oaky.
2003 Kistler Chardonnay Vine Hill
Bright, spicy nose. Bright, lemony center and acids linger on the finish.

Hard medicinal nose with a strong black rubber element. Hard mineral-y center with strong acids on the finish.
2004 Lewis Cellars Syrah Hudson Vyd
Peppery dark fruit on nose. Very extracted, slight bitter coffee-like center. Dark chocolate on finish.
1995 Merryvale Profile Red
Chewy iron-y fruit on nose. Lots of iron and fruit. Lots of fruit and acids. Good.
2001 Pahlmeyer Merlot
Very fruity, jammy nose. Jammy fruity  center. Very concentrated. Joanne didn’t like.
1999 Penfold’s Grange
Fresh cut wood on nose. Way too much wood showing through tons of fruit for my taste.
2001 Peter Michael Cabernet Sauvignon L’Espirt des Pavots
Hard bright fruit on the nose. Very blueberry with tons of acids on the finish.
2003 Peter Michael Chardonnay La Carriere
Vanilla custard on nose. Round smooth center. Smooth vanilla–oaky finish.
2003 Peter Michael Cabernet Sauvignon Les Pavots
Fruity, jammy nose. Red fruit jam center with lively acids on finish. Lots of extraction here.
1998 Pride Mountain Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Eucalyptus on nose. Hard menthol and fruit center extending to finish.
1997 A. Rocco Barbaresco Brich Ronchi
Vanilla and cherries on nose. Dry and tight fruity center with a light bright cherry finish. Very dry finish. Jack: In 10 years probably will be rocking.
1992 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Stag’s Leap District
Very fruity extracted center with a hard, slightly sweet finish.
1996 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley
Closed nose with a hint of fruit and vanilla. Hard very oaky center. Thin on fruit and oak lingers.
1975 Stag’s Leap Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon SLV Lot 3
Burnt fruit and carbon on nose. Char and cherries, burned fruit on center – like BBQ fruit. Very balanced with a long finish.
