Market has a prime location on Main Street in St. Helena. Although we've heard both plusses and minuses since it opened a few years ago, we've been wanting to check it our for ourselves. On their website they describe the concept of Market as "... as a warm neighborhood spot, designed for locals but just as welcoming to visitors."
I think it does a fine job at capturing that vision.
Market offers a three-course lunch ($15) and fish-of-the-day specials ($19). They also offer a soup and sandwich special ($10) at lunch. Locals I've spoken with like Market's feel; warm and comfortable.
We had a mixed feeling about our lunch there. We would return if we lived in St. Helena, but we would probably not have it in a short list for a visiting tourist. However, it is one of the St. Helena spots I would recommend for a cocktail and you certainly could get snack with it. It would also be a place comfortable for a solitary diner in wine country. There is a good-sized bar to sit at.
Chilled Cucumber and Avocado Soup with Lemon Sorbet and Fresh Mint $6.50
Sounded like a great idea. It was not. About half this much would have been too much. The balance of flavors was out of whack - too acidic and no starring flavor. Not good.
Fish n’ Chips, Champagne Battered Ling Cod and Fries, Two Sauces $13.50
Crispy fish and fries. Fish was fresh and flaky inside. Tartar sauce was okay. Good!
Fish of the Day:
Steelhead Salmon, Baby Bok Choy, Shiitake Mushrooms, Pickled Ginger, Carrots , Lime Curry Sauce - $19
A fine dish and a pretty one - but not one that Jack needs to order again.
A Very Adult Macaroni and Cheese, Hobb’s Bacon, Creamy Fiscalini Cheddar Sauce $11.50 One of Market's Signature dishes I was prepared to be impressed. I was not. It was good. A spicy hint to the sauce - horseradish(?) or maybe just the sharpness of the cheddar masquerading. There could have been more bacon. I did like the crispy topping. It's a very heavy mac & cheese and there was about twice as much as needed served.
You may notice that we do not give out a lot of praise. Having been to so many high-quality restaurants, it's pretty tough to impress us.
Most of our reviews are based on just one visit. We neither have the time nor the money (or often, the inclination) to visit most restaurants multiple times. So, please keep in mind that a single-visit review is a snapshot - the restaurant may be "on it" that day - or not. If the meal has a calamity involved (foreign objects in the food, wine poured on us, etc.) we try not to let it shade the overall review.
We pay for the food and beverages; restaurants never comp us. We try to be discreet about taking photos so that the staff doesn't notice/get an idea we're going to do a review. We rarely take notes in the restaurant.
Like the rest of our website, we update our restaurant review pages based upon subsequent visits.
